Industry and Marketing

Marketing and Industry are a big part of economics. In the sense of college though it is somewhat complex. There are thousands of colleges around the northwest alone, so how does one chose the right one for them.  Colleges market themselves in many ways; one of these ways is in where they are located. A good chunk of students coming fresh out of high school want either want to stay at home or go somewhere away from home. In my case I chose to go away from home because i thought it would help teach me independence. Another way schools market themselves is by offering scholarships to students with good grades and with exceptional athletic ability. Students can get scholarships for almost anything these days. A friend of mine got a scholarship for marking a box claiming he was Jewish. The fine print said you do not have to be Jewish to mark yes. Offering scholarships for academics and sports helps bigger colleges with enrollment.  However for athletes who don't make NCAA regulations Community Colleges and Junior Colleges have programs as  well to help them catch up. Another way colleges market themselves that people forget is thanks to college sports media coverage. Media coverage is one of the biggest sources of marketing in the United States.
Industry for college is a perfect market due to the fact that there a so many options for a students. Having more options for education helps a student figure out where they want to attend. Colleges, however, charge a hefty price for tuition, class fees, on campus housing, and other expenses. They have to charge so much because they have to pay teachers, pay utilities, and have budgets for other expenses.  Colleges follow a price leader when it comes to setting a price for tuition. when one university increases their tuition price they all increase there price. It seems as though not many colleges are working to reduce the price they are charging for tuition. I chose TVCC for the reason that it was a community college. Community colleges have a lower rate of tuition then a four year university. Community colleges have less staff and smaller utility costs. Different colleges also offer different degrees and different levels for those degrees. community colleges tend to have less options but offer you an option to get an Associates degree for less than a Four year college.
College is not for everyone but for those who choose to attend they have many options from a four year university to a small two year community college.
