Blog Post 1- Big Decisions

The world of economics has had a profound impact in the way people live there daily lives. People should learn about how economic concepts work and how they can effect the time and finances that challenges modern society. Economic decisions are as attractive to society as the plague. No one wants to talk about big decisions involving finances. However, I personally have had to make some life altering decisions over the course of the past year. Deciding to attend college at TVCC,where i plan to work on specializing in a field of study, had a significant impact on my families budget, although, the opportunity was to good to let pass.
Being from Pocatello, Idaho it was a hard decision to make when choosing a college to attend. Making the decision to come to Treasure Valley put a huge burden on my parents budget. My mom had to get a job to help support me in this adventure. A budget constraint shows all the possible outcomes of how money can be spent for the allotted time. My parents extra finances are no longer going towards things like vacations, so they are now using the funds to helping me pay tuition. Idaho State University is about a ten minute drive from house, but in comparing tuition costs we found that by me attending school here we would be saving around one-thousand dollars a quarter.
By specializing in a field of study that I enjoy I could maximize my time and skills to better expand the economy. My plan has been to go the business route and probably get a degree in accounting. Although that is no longer the plan, the concept of specializing still applies. My new plan is headed towards a career in law enforcement. As an example, an accountant has to oversee the completion of tax forms, where as a police officer writes tickets. Specializing in one area would make performing these tasks easier, thus allowing me to perform these tasks more efficiently.
One of my biggest life goals has been to run for a division one college track team. I Am currently registered as a Treasure Valley Track and Field athlete on a scholarship. I had other schools ask me to come run for them without a scholarship offer. The cost of going to one of these schools would have cost almost twice as much money. The track coach here at Treasure Valley told me that he would help me get to a point in my running career where I will have the times to move on from here and compete for a D1 team. I chose to make an alternative path towards my dream in the hopes that I can earn a scholarship to a division one college.
In conclusion, the field of economics greatly influences day to day life people need to see their budget constraints, opportunity costs or see how specializing can effects them. Talking about economics isn't a common topic people like to discuss, however, its not always what our first thoughts are but economics are always around.
